There are a few important things to know about Nick Andros. The first is this: he's deaf. He was in a car crash as a child, rendered unable to speak or hear, and communicates either through an exaggerated game of charades, or via the notepad he carries around with him. He is slowly trying to learn sign language. Also, do to a severe beating he'd received and a thumb jammed into his eye, he's lost sight in his right eye and wears sunglasses most of the time. Despite this, he's very friendly and decently talkative, if you catch him in the right mood.
When Captain Tripps hit, the affected population was immediately quarantined and kept within a few thousand miles, mostly in and around Colorado.
Nick is one of the few fortunate people to have survived the outbreak. He, and the rest of the survivors, made their way to Boulder, where they began their own little civilization. Nick became something of a leader to his people, though not by choice or even necessity.
It confuses and astounds him, why anyone would want a guy like him as a leader. But, sure enough, people just started looking to him for advice, and he accepted his role.
Now that the epidemic has passed and the government has covered it up, Nick has gone back to his rambling lifestyle.
